Stress, anxiety, tension; these words are not new to anyone. Although seen as a temporary complication, stress and anxiety have several long-term effects on the body – ranging from aches and pain to long-lasting, serious health issues like heart attacks, diabetes, mental health issues, and addictions, to name a few. Stress has the potential to create physical and mental ailments which, in turn, causes more stress; most of us are stuck in a vicious cycle with no way out.
Sound healing offers a low-cost and long-term solution to the problem. When you receive the sounds created by the metal or quartz Tibetan singing bowls, the body induces the relaxation response and helps alleviate anxiety. The high-intensity, low-frequency sound emitted from the bowls guides the body into a state of deep relaxation which promotes positive hormone secretion (like dopamine), improves blood pressure and promotes pain relief. The relaxation response is the body’s physiological response, to counter the fight-or-flight response and activation of the parasympathetic nervous system.
A study conducted by Goldsby, Goldsby, McWalters, Mills (2016) compared participants’ states of relaxation before and after a sound healing session. They found that – compared to the pre-mediation state – participants felt more relaxed and had a greater reduction in tension after the healing session. The authors reported that these sound healing methods could potentially be a catalyst for emotional and psychological well-being.
Sound healing has been used for a long time; for over 40,000 years, the Australian aboriginal tribes have used the didgeridoo as a sound healing instrument. Ancient healing instruments have been used for religious as well as spiritual ceremonies; one of these instruments is the Tibetan (also called “Himalayan”) singing bowls. Yet it does not have strong recall among those who may need it most.
Tune in to a centuries-old practice to improve your overall well-being.
